Tigray is an ancient land that features historically abundant, religiously devout and heroically legendary sites. Most of Semetic Ethiopia’s proudest claims of identity, history and victories come from Tigray. It was the epicenter of dynasties, the bed of rulers and remains to this day the land of humble heroes.
About Tigray
The history
Tigray is the bedrock of some of the most ancient of civilizations. It is where remnants of Yeha, which served as the capital of the pre-Aksumite kingdom of D'mt (10-5 BC) is situated, and home to the ancient Axumite kingdom and the historic settlements of it’s capital Axum, and the site of the battle of Adwa in 1896, which saw the defeat of Italian invading forces. The Battle of Adwa was a symbol of anti-colonial struggle for Africa and the African diaspora. More recently, the Tigray People Liberation Front (TPLF) battled for 17 years to liberate Tigray (in 1989) and spearhead the liberation of the rest of Ethiopia from the DERG — a brutal military junta — in 1991. This revolution and defeat of DERG is the major reason that Eritreans, who were at war for independence for 30 years, finally gained independence in 1991.
